Importance of Sunscreen in winters

Is it November already?? The year has almost come to an end. But we celebrated New years just 5  minutes ago, when and how in the world, did we reach the fag end of it. You can already feel the nip in  the air, your step has the extra bounce (maybe it’s just from the new boots you brought), and you are  already going for that piping hot Expresso Macchiato over the iced coffee. Soon you will want to replace  that strong SPF that has shielded you from the harsh sun all summer, with a heavy moisturizer, which  will infuse your skin with that instantaneous boost of hydration.

Why is sunscreen essential?

Sun rays provide us with the highly essential Vitamin D, which helps regulate and maintain, the  phosphate and calcium levels of our body. Lack of these, can lead children to suffer from rickets, and  osteomalacia in adults. But as we know, along with the pros, come the cons. Sun rays also emit out UVA  and UVB rays, which are harmful to the skin. Ultraviolet A (UVA) have a more prolonged wavelength,  and are known to damage our skin and are one of the leading causes of skin ageing. Ultraviolet B (UVB)  have a comparatively shorter wavelength and are one of the major reasons for sun darkening, sunburn, thickening of your skin and various types of skin related cancers. Sunscreens are topically applied lotions or gels, that helps protect us against the damaging effects of the sun. Not everyone is concious enough  to wear a sunscreen, armed with myriads of excuses like, ‘it’s too greasy’, 'it's too oily’, ‘it doesn’t make  a good base below my makeup' or ‘I don’t like the feel of it’ , people escape from using it. But when we  notice and realize that skin cancer is one of the most leading causes of mortality, we should understand  the implications that a wee bit of discomfort always trumps, in the face of losing yourselves to bigger  and more serious health issues.

In summers we use copious amounts of Sunscreen to protect ourselves from the harmful UVA and UVB  rays. Slathering on a good sunscreen is a surefire way to protect your skin’s health and appearance. But  what about winters? We always assume that the summer sun is the only damaging one. In winters, the  cloudy sky and less intense sun, means reduced sun damage. We say, Nay! Let us tell you, just how

much havoc the winter sun can play with our skin.

• Thinning ozone layer

The ozone layer is at its thinnest during the frigid winter months. Ozone depletion usually hits it’s peak  around the mid of October. This phenomenon tapers in the spring when the polar vortex becomes weak.  The thinning of the ozone layer means, less absorption of the UV rays, which invariably increases the risk  of excess UV exposure.

• Risk of Cancer

The sun seems much milder and filtered during the cold winter months. Infact, we crave for some  warmth from the sun, and love lounging in our backyard, when the sun finally decides to make an  appearance. Does that mean that our exposure to the harmful rays are also filtered? No. Infact that  lounging and our hunt for warmth also means increased exposure to the sun’s rays, vis-à-vis sunburn  and sunspots, which increases the chances of cancer too. Studies show that the exposure of harmful UV  rays are linked directly to Melanoma, that is one of the most fatal types of cancer.

• Icy cold winds

The harsh winds of the winters lack moisture and strip your skin of it. This moisture loss leads to  chapped lips, excessive drying of your skin and wrinkles. Using a good sunscreen is a great way to infuse  hydration into the skin making it supple, soft and youthful.
